Our junkyard find - a 1977 International Scout II
The International Harvester Scout holds a special place in American history as one of the first true sport utility vehicles. When it debuted in 1961, it offered something new as rugged, go anywhere truck that connected rural roads to city streets. Built by a company better known for tractors, the Scout quickly carved out its own identity as a vehicle that could do it all. With its clean lines and no-nonsense durability, it became an instant favorite among drivers who wanted practicality with personality.
The early Scout 80 and 800 models were pure utility, designed for people who valued function over flash. As the seventies arrived, the Scout evolved with more comfort and capability. The Scout II, introduced in 1971, offered smoother contours, stronger engines, and more versatility while keeping its adventurous soul intact. The late 70's models represented the best of its kind, and the Scout Traveler added a longer wheelbase for more room to roam. 1980 marked the end of an era and the final year of production, but also sealed the Scout’s place as an enduring symbol of exploration and independence.
More than forty years later, the Scout continues to inspire with its timeless design and untamed character. It reminds us of a time when adventure meant stepping off the pavement and following curiosity wherever it led. From the mountain trails of Colorado to the beaches of Baja, these vehicles have left their mark on the landscape and on the people who love them.
At Joyride Jewelry, we’ve carried that same spirit into our newest collection made from a blue 1977 Scout II, an orange 1979 Scout II, and a copper 1980 Scout Traveler. Each piece was hand cut and shaped in our Colorado studio, preserving the original paint, texture, and story in every piece. The colors echo decades of sun and road and the patina tells of resilience making each piece unique. This collection isn’t just about salvaged metal, it’s about honoring the adventurous lives these Scouts once led and giving their stories a new way to travel.
